Doesn’t the word kraken conjure up the most wonderfully disturbing images. Mythical giant squids and octopi harassing sailors of yore, not to mention giving a full-sized whale a fight for its life.

Well, this Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. the Vineyard Haven Library is bringing in an expert to go beyond the horror stories and suction pod trivia and get to the truth about these mysterious ocean creatures. Turns out they are actually one of the most intelligent species of the invertebrates.

Puppet Parade

The fourth annual puppet parade takes place in Vineyard Haven this Saturday, Oct. 29, beginning at 3 p.m. The parade course starts at the St. Augustine Church parking lot on Franklin Street, heads down Church street, takes a left on Main street toward the Capawock movie theater and comes to a rest in front of the linden tree for a puppet celebration before heading back along the same route.

All are invited to watch or join in on the fun.

Sissinghurst Castle Talk

Sissinghurst Castle, located in Kent, England, is one of the world’s most celebrated gardens. In the 1930’s Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson created a garden in the ruin of an Elizabethan manor, realigning Sissinghurst with its Elizabethan past. Sissinghurst also had a past as a thriving farm.

This week features the first in a series of three Speakeasy nights to be held at State Road Restaurant in West Tisbury, all of which are to benefit the West Tisbury Library.

Each evening will feature a prominent writer discussing his or her work and taking questions. There will also be hors d’oeuvres and light refreshments.

On Wednesday, Oct. 26, the first speaker will be Pulitzer-prize winning author, Geraldine Brooks. Her latest book, Caleb’s Crossing, is set in 17th century Martha’s Vineyard.

Bake Sale for Daybreak

The Daybreak Clubhouse of Martha’s Vineyard Community Services is holding a bake sale from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22 in front of the old Bowl and Board on Main street, Vineyard Haven.

There will be a variety of baked goods, freshly made by volunteers, apple cider, pumpkins and more. The money raised by the bake sale will support the Daybreak Clubhouse’s operational expenses.
