As A Witness, a Christmas pageant for the 21st century, will be performed at the Old Whaling Church on Sunday, Dec. 18, and Monday, Dec. 19.
The production features music ranging from medieval carols such as The Angel Gabriel Came Down, and O Come All Ye Faithful to modern gospel music including Rise Up Shepherd and Follow, and He Had Done Great Things for Me.
Black Powder Shoot
The Martha’s Vineyard Rod & Gun Club will hold its 12th annual Black Powder Shoot on Sunday, Dec. 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., one day in advance of the start of primitive firearm deer season. Members and the public are invited to participate in the muzzle-loading marksmanship competition.
New Dollar Tree Sprouts
At West Tisbury Library
The West Tisbury Library Foundation, Inc. hopes to grow its fund-raising efforts, thanks to a new dollar tree program announced this week.
For each $1 donation the West Tisbury Free Public Library receives, the foundation will add a leaf inscribed with the donor’s name to a paper tree on the library’s wall. An anonymous donor has offered to match every $1 donation up to $1,000.
It’s a Wonderful Life
It’s a Wonderful Life, the radio play written by Philip Grecian based on the film by Frank Capra, is being performed on Dec. 17 at 8 p.m. and Dec. 18 at 1 p.m. by the Vineyard Playhouse at the regional high school’s performing arts center.
This live stage “radio show” is recommended for ages eight and older.
Sail MV Sale
Sail Martha’s Vineyard is presenting an exhibit and sale of maritime art, jewelry, crafts and note cards by several Island artists and photographers. The exhibit opens with an artists’ reception from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, at the office of Sail MV located at 110 Main street in Vineyard Haven and transformed for the holidays into an art gallery,
The hours of the show are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily throughout Dec. 23. A portion of proceeds from any sales benefits Sail MV’s free sailing programs for Island kids.
Visiting Poets
On Thursday, Dec. 15, at 5:30 p.m. the West Tisbury Library will host poets G.E. Patterson and Samantha Barrow.
G. E. Patterson is a poet, critic and translator whose collections of poetry include To and From and Tug, which won the Minnesota Book Award. Mr. Patterson has received fellowships from the Bread Loaf Writers Conference, Cave Canem, the Djerassi Foundation, the MacDowell Colony, and the Minnesota State Arts Board.
