The Vineyard Transit Authority (VTA) will be extending its free bus ride program, thanks to funds appropriated by the state legislature.
After a wave of complaints about the removal of benches from two bus shelters adjacent to the SSA terminal in Vineyard Haven earlier this month, the Tisbury select board agreed Tuesday to replace the benches.
The Tisbury select board this week agreed to remove the benches from two bus stop shelters across from the Steamship Authority terminal in Vineyard Haven.
Service aboard the buses will be free from Nov. 29 to Sept. 30, 2025 thanks to a $1.8 million grant from the state.
Once the new buses are purchased, 87 per cent of the VTA’s overall fleet will be electric.
From Nov. 24 to March 31, rides on the Vineyard Transit Authority will be free. Insteading of paying $1.25 per town for a ride, passengers can hop on the Island’s bus system without paying any fares as part of the “try transit” program sponsored by the state legislature.
