The commission’s vote Thursday night clears the way for the school to seek a building permit from the town of Tisbury, although commissioners imposed several conditions on their approval.

After neighbors of Vineyard Montessori School objected earlier this month to the size and scale of a proposed new preschool building on the Vineyard Haven campus, head of school Deborah Jernegan and attorney Ross Seavey presented a modified design to the Martha’s Vineyard Commission.

Neighbors of the school spoke at length during Thursday’s Martha's Vineyard Commission meeting, saying the proposed building is too large and would add to already-vexing noise and traffic from the school.
