Sunday was the last day for Beadniks, the popular Vineyard Haven store that has been in operation for 24 years. Owner Sally Roesler will focus on her wholesale business in Virginia Beach, Va., and online.

From retail stores to gyms and inns on the Vineyard, 48 merchants participated in small business Saturday last week, the most the Island has seen since the shopping holiday was conceived by American Express in 2010, according to Nancy Gardella at the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce.

With everything from candles and cards to jewelry and toys, the Main street Vineyard Haven store has served both year-round and summer customers since 1913.

A new location near the Black Dog Cafe on State Road is set to open in the coming weeks. Heavy demand on the Island for Benjamin Moore paints prompted the decision, the store owners said.

There are new businesses opening on Main street Vineyard Haven, but the town business association may be losing steam. Tisbury business association president Dawn Braasch announced this week that she is stepping down from her position, and said if a replacement cannot be found the organization may fold.

“I am sending this notice to let you know that I am withdrawing as president of the TBA. I had hoped someone else on the board would come forward to take the reins of the association, but no one has,” said Ms. Braasch in an email to the association sent Oct. 30.

After the last hurrah of Columbus Day weekend, many of the Main street business owners in Vineyard Haven hang signs on their doors saying “Closed” or “See You Next Season.”

On the corner of Main and Centre streets, the long-awaited Cafe Moxie is finally open.

On Tuesday morning couples were seated at tables in the cafe with steaming cups of coffee.
