The West Tisbury building department will seek disciplinary action against an Island plumber who installed plumbing without a permit at State Road restaurant.
Building inspectors Ernie Mendenhall and Joe Tierney notified the West Tisbury selectmen on Wednesday that they plan to file a complaint with the state against Walter Smith Plumbing. The company installed plumbing in an unpermitted basement kitchen at the restaurant, which has been fined for a zoning code violation.
Mr. Mendenhall said appealing to the state was the “only vehicle” of punitive relief.

“It was one of my earliest memories of making a birthday cake,” the 18-year-old regional high school graduate said this week on a short break from his job at State Road restaurant in West Tisbury. “When the cake was done I dumped the bowl and it got all in my hair. I made a total mess, and I’ve loved it ever since.”
The sale of beer and wine has begun in two West Tisbury restaurants. Last Friday marked the first night the Lambert’s Cove Inn and State Road Restaurant sold beer and wine, thanks to last-minute license approval from the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.
Both restaurants received their permits late Friday afternoon, shortly before the dinner hour. Lambert’s Cove Inn co-owner Scott Jones said he was not expecting it for another two weeks.
West Tisbury selectmen took a historic step on Wednesday, unanimously voting to approve the town’s first beer and wine license. State Road restaurant, which spearheaded the campaign to bring wine and beer sales to the town, applied for and was granted a year-round license.
Owner Mary Kenworth said the restaurant would close only during the month of March.
The license must still be approved by the state Alcohol Beverage Control Commission before beer and wine may be served.
