Daffodils are blooming, Gio’s has opened for the season, spring is officially here. And high school sports remain in full swing.

In the sixth and final inning of the varsity softball team’s 16-1 Tuesday rout of Falmouth, one visiting Clipper stands at the plate trying to break down sophomore Vineyard pitcher Hailee McCarthy. The possibility seems unlikely — Hailee has allowed just four hits and two walks in this game, and has gone two for four in her own plate appearances — but the opposition fouls off the ball again and again, pushing the count to 3-2.

After a slow spring break week, the regional high school teams will get things started up again this Tuesday with home games, meets and matches for softball, girls’ lacrosse, girls’ tennis, and track. The baseball team will play at home on Monday.

Stormy, soggy weather forced the cancellation of several of this week’s games, but the Vineyarders made the most of their limited time on the fields and courts. Most teams have next week off for spring break, although baseball will take to the road for three games and boys’ lacrosse plays Monday and Wednesday at home.

Though the weather has been slow to warm, spring sports are heating up at the regional high school. The boys’ lacrosse team took a 16-3 loss to Weston, last year’s number eight MIAA seed, in their first home game of the season. Playing tough nonleague opponents, however, is a crucial part of the lacrosse program, said head coach Chris Greene.

After two weeks of tryouts and preseason practices, the spring sports season is underway at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. Boys’ lacrosse, track, and the boys’ and girls’ tennis teams all had their first games and matches this week (scores were unavailable at press time), with baseball, softball, girls’ lacrosse and sailing kicking off over the weekend and into April.
