Runners from across the Island and elsewhere gathered for this year’s annual Chilmark Road Race under a clear blue sky Saturday, celebrating a tradition entering its 37th year on Martha’s Vineyard.

A harsh winter and the promise of more severe weather led to the cancellation of the Martha’s Vineyard 20-Miler Road Race scheduled for Saturday. Race organizers and emergency personnel cited concerns about runner and volunteer safety on the icy, narrow course.

Two favorite 5Ks happen on Saturday, August 23: the Sullivan 5K Walk and Run in Oak Bluffs, and the Run for Jabberwocky 5K in Edgartown.

Vineyard House invites all to its 24th Annual Columbus Day 5K Road Race and 1 Mile Fun Run on Sunday, Oct. 13. The race begins at 10:30 at Ocean Park in Oak Bluffs, continues along New York avenue, to the East Chop bluffs and back to the finish line in front of the Wesley House Hotel.

A trio of cross-country runners took the top spots in the first annual Gay Head 10K held Sunday morning in Aquinnah. Conor Welch, 25, of Allston, won the race with a time of 36:06.

Run, don’t walk to sign up for the Pennywise Path Walk/Run to the new library in Edgartown set for Labor Day, Sept. 2, at 10 a.m. Participants will be transported by bus from the Edgartown School, the site of the new library, to the start of the 5K race at the Pennywise Path Preserve off 18th street.
