Longtime friends of the Yard, Gus Solomons Jr and Carmen de Lavallade, return with Paradigm, their company of fellow luminaries, for a weekend of performances in the Yard’s intimate Patricia N. Nanon Theater. Island audiences may remember Carmen de Lavallade and Gus Solomons from last summer’s tribute to Patricia Nanon at the Martha’s Vineyard Performing Arts Center, in which they performed Three Scenes from Archy & Mehitabel.
When your grandfather is Grammy-winning Cuban pianist and composer Bebo Valdez and your father famed Cuban pianist, bandleader, composer and arranger Chucho Valdez, naturally you decide to be a baseball player.
So it was with Chuchito Valdez, the now-renowned pianist who will be playing on Thursday, July 16, at 7 and 9 p.m. at the Whaling Church in Edgartown.
The musical Summer of ’42 will open Thursday, July 16, at the Katharine Cornell Theatre on Spring street in Vineyard Haven.
Based on the novel and screenplay by Herman Raucher, the story takes place on a small island in New England in the infamous summer of 1942. America is at war, and 15-year-old Hermie and his buddies experience hilarious adolescent adventures in a summer they’ll never forget. Along the way Hermie learns about life, love and the scope of human compassion.
David Crohan and Friends Play from the Heart at Tabernacle
Pianist David Crohan will present a benefit concert in the Tabernacle Monday, July 13 at 8 p.m.. The concert is to benefit Compassionate Care ALS and Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard. David’s friends include Katie Mayhew, Hugh Taylor, Merrily Fenner, and Tom Billitto. Three of these friends appeared regularly at David’ Island House on Circuit avenue.
Operafest Brings the Love
An intensive two-week training program for talented young singers culminates at 8 p.m. this Saturday at Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs, when students from the Claudette Peterson Vocal Studio’s OperaFest 2009 will don make-up and costumes for a gala performance entitled Summer of Love: Passionate Arias and Romantic Scenes from Classic Opera. or the first time in its nearly 40-year history on the Island, the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society will open its summer concert series by offering free admission to the first two shows. The series is a gift from Sam Feldman to Vineyard music lovers in honor of his late wife Gretchen. The performances of William DeRosa and Friends on Monday night at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown, and on Tuesday at the Chilmark Community Center will be open to the public free of charge.
