Deer Tick is not just a really nasty strain of insect you could find attached to your leg after too much time spent at South Beach. It is also the name of John McCauley’s folk/punk/blues band playing at Nectar’s this Saturday night.
Mr. McCauley has carved out a reputation for his band within the crowded genre of indie rock bands with the prefix Deer (see: Deerhunter, Deerhoof) through raucous live shows.
You never know when that tap on your shoulder is going to come. We’ve been watching you for a while, they say, as you look around bewildered. No, this isn’t a Skull and Bones initiation. It’s a cappella.
The Vineyard Sound have been delighting Island ears since 1992. From June to August they can be found wearing their trademark look of shorts, oxford shirts, ties, and sandals or boat shoes at various churches and private events around the Vineyard.
Waban Park last Saturday was reminiscent of days when folk music swept the nation and outdoor concerts became legendary events representing a social movement of peace, love and community.
People lay in the grass, kids ran around and blew bubbles, and many local bands played short sets, including Willy Mason, Nina Violet, and the duo Jemima James and Dan Waters.
Two years ago Mike Parker walked into the trailer office of Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard with $2,000 and a wide grin on his face. The previous weekend he had organized a benefit concert for Hospice. The money was his gift to the organization that had supported his family when his father was dying of liver cancer while Mr. Parker was still in high school.
Fifty years ago they rocked. Today they, well, you judge whether they still got the beat.
The Bodes are reuniting and playing the Edgartown Lighthouse from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6.
And who are the Bodes, you ask? Four Island men who during their high school days back in the 1960’s formed a band. They are Rick Convery on drums and vocals, Charlie Leighton on bass and vocals, Jack Mayhew on guitar, and Peter Valenti on guitar and vocals.
Island Community Chorus
After a day at sea, or at least on the beach, what better way to ring in the Fourth on the Vineyard than a rousing session of sea chanties? On July 3 starting at 8 p.m. the Island Community Chorus will begin their summer concert with a round of chanties guaranteed to take you to the high seas of enjoyment. The program takes place at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs.
