Edgartown selectmen Monday asked school officials to put the brakes on a proposal to change the way school choice funds are allocated through the superintendent’s shared services budget.

Students in the up-Island school district will be given more free rein in the near future on choosing which school to attend, the district committee decided this week.

A renovation project at the Chilmark School went slightly over budget this summer, leaving not enough cash on hand to address a faulty boiler in the school heating system. Members of the up-Island district committee discussed the problem.

Faced with a large deficit in school funding in West Tisbury, up-Island school committee members agreed to cut $166,000 from the district budget at a somber meeting Monday. The committee meets again Thursday.

The up-Island regional school committee voted Monday to remove a much-debated school resource officer position from their $10.7 million draft budget, following another lengthy discussion on the financial plan for 2016.
