The Oak Bluffs fireworks will be canceled for a second straight summer due to the pandemic, the town firemen’s civic association announced Tuesday.

With Illumination Night, the Agricultural Fair and Oak Bluffs fireworks all on the docket, this week marks the high point of traditional summer events on Martha’s Vineyard. It all begins at sundown tonight, with the 150th Grand Illumination.

Friday's the night, August 17, when the skies above Oak Bluffs light up in color. The annual Oak Bluffs fireworks begin around 9 p.m., with a band concert starting at 8 p.m.

Illumination, the Agricultural Fair, the Oak Bluffs Fireworks, it’s all happening this coming week, the end of summer bonanza that keeps on giving.

The key ingredient in fireworks was invented in the ninth century by the Chinese to ward off evil spirits.
