With plots at Abel’s Hill Cemetery a relative bargain, the Chilmark cemetery commission has voted to gradually increase the rates.

A proposal to allow beer and wine sales at restaurants in Chilmark came under fire at a selectmen’s meeting on Tuesday. Several longtime residents gathered to speak out against the idea.

The recent purchase of the Santander Bank property in Chilmark by the Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank will serve an up-Island need, but also leaves the town with one less potential site for a public safety building.

Less than four months after voters approved a major restoration plan for Squibnocket Beach, the Chilmark selectmen have acquired two properties near the beach, where the plan calls for a new parking lot and a new access road to the homes at Squibnocket Farm.

Chilmark selectmen approved a warrant for a special town meeting Feb. 2 that aims to clear the way for a major restoration project at Squibnocket Beach. Voters will be asked whether to approve a plan developed by a town committee last year.

With demand for affordable homesites running high and an upcoming lottery for four lots at Nab’s Corner a few days away, the Chilmark selectmen this week denied two appeals from applicants who did not meet the guidelines.
