The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys’ hockey team bounced back from a rough mid-season stretch to win big against Cambridge Rindge and Latin at home on Saturday, scoring five goals in the second period en route to an easy 8-0 win.
With the win the Vineyarders’ record stands at 8-3-2 on the season.
Members and friends of the Martha’s Vineyard Surfcasters Association got a flavor of a busy season ahead on Saturday. The club now in its 20th year held their annual afternoon banquet at the Edgartown Whaling Church. More than 100 anglers showed up for the luncheon, to sip soda and eat fried chicken. The event included the delivery of plaques to first place winners of the club’s own summer-long fishing tournament and included the election of officers and a report on plans for the new year.

The Martha’s Vineyard Surfcasters Association will hold their annual banquet tomorrow at noon at the Edgartown Whaling Church. More than 100 recreational fishermen are expected to attend the luncheon in the Baylies Room. The event is open to club members and prospective members during this celebration of the club’s 20th year.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Massachusetts is sponsoring a free family-to-family educational course in Oak Bluffs for family members of individuals with a serious mental illness. The course has been given nationwide to over 100,000 family members since its inception. It is taught by two trained family member volunteers and is intended to help family caregivers cope with a close relative’s mental illness.
Teachers and parents from across Massachusetts took part in the Rising Stars of Massachusetts celebration, an annual event sponsored by the Early Education for All campaign to highlight the positive impact high-quality early education has on young children and families. But the real starring role was played by pre-kindergarteners from Martha’s Vineyard Community Services Early Childhood Program.
The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys’ hockey team suffered two of its toughest losses of the season this week, losing 3-2 in the closing minutes Friday to old rival Han-over, and then losing 4-1 to a top Division I team from Framingham at home Saturday.
Coach Matt Mincone said his team actually played better in the more lopsided 4-0 loss to Framingham than they did against Hanover the night before.
The coach said the Vineyarders played flat and uninspired hockey against Hanover in a game they easily could have won.
