Herbal Medicine
Holly Bellebuono of Vineyard Herbs returns to the Polly Hill Arboretum for her popular salve-making workshop on Tuesday, August 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. The workshop begins with a walk to identify and collect medicinal herbs and weeds on the arboretum grounds. Next, participants make their own oil infusions and beeswax-based ointments.
Few people know their way around the Island links like local wunderkind Tony Grillo. As President Obama settles into a vacation in West Tisbury that is almost certain to include a few rounds, Mr. Grillo leaves for Seattle to compete in the U.S. Amateur Championship. Before leaving, though, he spoke with the Gazette at his home course, Farm Neck, about what the duffer-in-chief can expect on Vineyard fairways.
FOUR FISH: The Future of the Last Wild Food. By Paul Greenberg. Penguin Press, New York, N.Y. July 2010. 304 pages. $25.95, hardcover.
The title is too narrow. Don’t think for a moment this is a book only about salmon, cod, bass and tuna. The book goes beyond the history and plight of four fish, to our hunger for fresh fish of all kinds. For anyone who wonders where the swordfish went, how we emerged from the collapse of the whale fishery, or simply which fish is safe to order at the restaurant, Four Fish offers much.
If Matt Heineman is nearing his limit, he does nothing to show it this Sunday afternoon. The 27-year-old ran the Chilmark Road Race Saturday, but the 5K along Middle Road was just a warmup for this. Sunday is a marathon — specifically, the Alex Cohen Memorial Basketball Marathon. Mr. Heinemen first stepped onto the court behind the Chilmark Community Center at noon, and it’s now nearing 5:45 p.m. There have been breaks for the individual players over the past six hours, but the games themselves just keep going throughout the afternoon and into the evening.
A USTA junior tennis tournament will be held at Vineyard Youth Tennis the weekend of August 14 and 15. The tournament will consist of boys’ and girls’ 12-and-under and 14-and-under age divisions (this means anyone under 12 years old can also play in the 12 and under division).
This is a great way to get some points for your ranking without leaving the Island. You can register at usta.com/tennislink (click “USTA Junior Tournaments” in the upper right corner, then enter tournament ID# 450414710).
