Students in Bill Seabourne's Building Trades vocational class at the regional high school typically build sheds as their final project, but last October, the group was given a much larger challenge: construct an outdoor pavillion, designed by architect Chuck Sullivan, at the YMCA. The frame of the building was put up on Monday.

The students have spent approximately 22 hours per week working on the pavillion within the confines of the shop classroom at the high school as they sawed, sanded and stained the thick support beams, ultimately donating $20,000 of labor to the project. The Y received a grant from the Heckscher Foundation, which also helped fund the center's playground, to help finance the rest of the pavillion. Several Island businesses, including D. Best Construction and Vineyard Home Center and all of the lumberyards, donated labor and materials as well. Fred Fournier provided landscape work, Lawton Welding fabricated the steel work and Bill Howell and Alfie Araujo contributed the cement work for the concrete foundation slab.

"It's just cool to see everything come together," junior Ben Lukowitz said.
