Familiar places become wondrously new in the Island light of October. This is never more evident than at the edges of the day, when you can't help but notice a clean, fine quality in the light as the first beams of the sun burns off the morning fog and then slants across lawns and open places. Already the sumac on hillsides and in old fields is showing tinges of red, a taste of the colorful show to come. Too soon, the leaves will be underfoot, and rakes will come out to create piles stacked high.
