Even as the days grow shorter and darker, the Vineyard turns brighter. Strings of seasonal lights and shop window decorations in the main streets of Island towns illuminate the passing December days. Candles light the windows of homes and church altars speak to the joy and compassion of the season.
The winter solstice confirms the formal arrival of our coldest season this Thursday, at 10:27 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Christmas follows soon, and already the bustle of shoppers tells us there is still much to do in the little time left.
