In this pocket before summer really begins, some measure the advance of the season not by the blooming of buttercups but by the sudden absence of parking places downtown. Shop owners are nervously hoping for the best. Osprey look down from their perches with something like scorn. Rollerbladers, cyclists and pedestrians try to be civil at bottlenecks on the bike paths.
