Harbors are empty and the Island is a blanket of quiet, but inside the shop at Great Harbor Boatyard in Edgartown it’s anything but quiet as crews prepare sailboats and powerboats for the coming summer. Bruce Farland’s shop is located off the Edgartown West Tisbury Road.

Mr. Farland’s specialty is restoring fiberglass boats. He only works on boats up to 27 feet in length, which is the interior length of the shop.

For the past six weeks the crew has worked on a 1978 21-foot Boston Whaler.

The restoration project was led by Dan Deslauriers. He stripped the boat down to its essential hull and slowly rebuilt her. The topside was lightly sanded and painted with white Awlgrip. Two new custom-built storage bins were built beneath new seats.

All the tropical hardwood onboard, which included hatches and trim, was removed from the boat. The pieces were separately sanded down, revarnished and reinstalled.

Once completed, the restored Whaler will be wrapped in canvas and stored outside until spring.

The crew is also restoring a 1960 10-foot Cape Dory sailing dinghy that came from western Massachusetts.

In addition to Mr. Farland, the crew at the shop includes Wolfie Blair and Kyle Colter.
