The annual Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby was held Feb. 1 at the Chilmark Community Center. Five dens of Scouts took part in the event, which also featured a chili contest.

"It's a time for us to get parents and children working together," Cubmaster Matt Hayden said. Scouts are given a block of wood and four wheels, and have two weeks to make their cars. The cars are pitted against one another in several rounds on a short wooden track that is deceptively sophisticated — times are measured down to the hundredth of a second.

Mr. Hayden always offers secret hints for maximum aerodynamics, which include scrubbing the inside of the wheels with toothpaste. His son Jack followed every secret hint to come away the champion of the day at the races. Awards were also given by den, wtih the Bear den earning several of the fastest times.

Some trophies were awarded by fan voting, with Henry Kyburg's vividly painted car earning Best Craftsmanship, Most Scout Worthy, and Most Outrageous. Ryan Fink also took home a Most Scout Worthy honor, and JJ Polleys' car was named Public Pick.

"It's the best and biggest [scout] event," Mr. Hayden said. "Everybody shows up."
