Editor’s Note: Mike Wallace wrote the following piece for Peter Simon’s book On the Vineyard II, published in 1990. It appears here with permission. Mr. Wallace died on April 7 at the age of 93.

Something extraordinary happens each time I leave my “real” life in New York city and arrive at home in Vineyard Haven. All the magic of my schoolboy excursions to the Vineyard comes flooding back, all the early memories.

The little village of Lahardan in the parish of Addergoole, built on the banks of Lough Conn and nestled at the foot of Mount Nephin in County Mayo, Ireland, seems an unlikely place to be chosen as Ireland’s Titanic Village. But 100 years ago 14 young men and women left the village to travel to America together to seek their fortune. They traveled by horse and cart and then took several trains across Ireland to reach what was then known as Queenstown in County Cork and boarded the world’s most famous ship, the Titanic.

BEACH COMPROMISE

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

In November 2011 at a special town meeting, West Tisbury park and recreation proposed a regulation that would allow dogs access to Lambert’s Cove Beach from Sept. 16 to June 14, not allowing them access from June 15 to Sept. 15. The new regulation passed with much discussion. Petitioners have brought the issue back again, to be decided at this April’s annual town meeting.

Israel in recent years has become a travel destination of choice for a number of Vineyarders, Jewish and Christian alike. I am among them and am recently back from Jerusalem. As Passover and Easter arrive, I have been recalling that ancient city’s holy sites. In any season Old Jerusalem on its hilltop is a city of spirituality and beauty, but at this holiday time it is especially so.

We are writing in support of Question 2 on West Tisbury’s April 12 town ballot. Question 2 authorizes the selectmen to grant beer and wine licenses to restaurants which seat 50 or morepatrons. It also authorizes the selectmen to grant one-day beer and wine licenses to organizers of fundraisers held at venues in West Tisbury.
