Law Aims to Save Atlantic Fish Stocks

In the final hours of Congress early this month, legislators agreed to vote in a new federal fishery management for the years ahead.

The Magnuson Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act oversees the way scientists, fishery managers and fishermen harvest one of the nation's most valued resources.

The new legislation, a cornerstone for the way stocks are managed, was passed by the Senate and voted by the House a few days later.

The Black Dog Tavern Company, Inc. will pay a $50,000 civil penalty for not reporting continued sales of children's hooded sweatshirts after they were recalled for a strangulation hazard last February, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced this past Friday.

Commission investigators visited two Black Dog stores this past August and saw that the recalled sweatshirts with drawstrings were still for sale. The investigators purchased three of them.

Land Bank Acquires Aquinnah Oceanfront, Scenic Chilmark Field

The Martha's Vineyard Land Bank this week added another 400 feet of Aquinnah white sand beach to its oceanfront holdings, and also acquired a scenic field on South Road in Chilmark. Both up-Island properties are roughly eight acres. The purchase prices were $2.25 million and $875,000, respectively.

Without management, the Mill Pond off Edgartown Road in West Tisbury will look more like wetlands than a pond within the next decade, according to the senior biologist in charge of a town-commissioned report released last week.
