Hobbit in Edgartown

It’s Tolkien Week, and the Edgartown library is celebrating the stories of J.R.R. Tolkien, creator of the Hobbit books and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, through Sept. 23.

The library will screen an animated version of the Hobbit story at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18, in the children’s room. This film is suitable for third-graders and up.

Woods Hole-New Bedford Service Resumes

New England Fast Ferry service linking New Bedford and Woods Hole resumed yesterday after being interrupted for about one week due to a mechanical error with one of the ferries.

The New Bedford to Woods Hole ferry service is a pilot program running through Nov. 10 that will test the market for commuters and tourists.

New England Fast Ferry also operates year-round service between the Vineyard and New Bedford under license from the Steamship Authority.

A MedFlight helicopter had a bumpy landing at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital Friday evening when a piece of tarp covering contruction materials was sucked off the ground and got caught in the chopper’s propeller, forcing it to land partially off the heliport.

In what promises to be an interesting and perhaps emotional doubleheader, the Martha’s Vineyard Commission on Thursday will review both a plan to expand the baseball park at Veira Park in Oak Bluffs and another to designate five ancient pathways in Edgartown into a special protection zone that might limit their use and future development.
