Flu Clinic on Monday
An all-Island flu immunization clinic will be on Monday, Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School gymnasium. People 50 or older, anyone who has a chronic medical condition, pregnant women, health-care workers or first responders with direct patient contact should attend.
Three years ago, the Nantucket bay scallop harvest suddenly more than doubled in size, from around 15,000 bushels to more than 32,000. It was the year the industry ate its future.
The following season the harvest crashed. The total catch in 2005-06 was one-sixth as large — just 5,500 bushels. It was even worse last season, when fewer than 4,000 bushels were hauled up, the lowest tally since they began keeping records 30 years earlier.
The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Minnesingers present their annual auction and mini-concert tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 10, offering everyone a preview of the silent auction beginning at 5 p.m., with a live auction at 7 p.m. and gourmet food at the Portuguese American Club on Vineyard avenue in Oak Bluffs. Admission is $15.
The Permanent Endowment Fund for Martha’s Vineyard, the Island’s community foundation, made grants to 14 nonprofit organizations for a total of $28,000 in October, chairman Deborah L. Hale has announced.
The foundation provided a grant to Martha’s Vineyard Museum to support the development of an American history course curriculum for high school. Development of the new course work will be done in collaboration with the Vineyard school system.
Yacht Club Roulette
Test your luck and help Island kids at the same time: bring some friends to the Edgartown Yacht Club next Friday, Nov. 16, for a casino night to benefit the Martha’s Vineyard Boys’ and Girls’ Club. Organizers promise a fun-filled evening of gaming and good times where you can try your hand at blackjack, roll for the riches at the craps table, and spin your way to the penthouse at the money wheel and roulette tables. Door prizes and raffles are also planned. Admission is $10. For details, call 508-627-3303.
