The hunt for a Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School principal, a position which will be created with Margaret (Peg) Regan’s resignation this June — is down to four candidates. The final candidates are from Texas, Connecticut, Massachusetts and the Vineyard.

Skiff’s Island is back. The elusive island that sometimes resides southeast of the Vineyard may be making a comeback this winter.

The island is legendary. A number of ships have been lost to the treacherous waters of the Island or its shoals. While recreational anglers sometimes have caught their biggest fish next to it, there are other fishermen who are fearful of it, especially at night.

A 20-year-old woman who grew up on the Island and dreamed of being a teacher was killed Tuesday evening when the vehicle she was driving was struck by a delivery truck at the intersection of County and Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Roads.

Brandy Marie Gibson, who graduated from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School in 2004 and recently worked as a substitute teacher in Vineyard Haven and Edgartown, was pronounced dead at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital around 11 p.m. Tuesday night.

Partners HealthCare will honor employees at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center today, Friday, Feb. 1 in the 12th Annual Partnership in Excellence Awards.

Partners owns the hospital and nursing center. This is the first year the Vineyard hospital and Windemere employees are eligible for nomination.

Vineyard Voters Back Obama, Romney in State Primary

Bucking the state trend on Tuesday, Vineyard voters squarely backed Sen. Barack Obama with 55 per cent of the 5,288 Democrat votes cast, while Sen. Hillary Clinton picked up 40 per cent. The result is a mirror image of Massachusetts numbers which put Senator Clinton at 56 per cent and Senator Obama at 41 per cent.
