The whaling era is a Vineyard story. Martha’s Vineyard whaling captains and their crew traveled the globe. They went to New Zealand, to Japan, north into the frigid seas of the Arctic, and as far south as the ice-filled waters of Antarctica.

A $1.5 million wastewater proposal for Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School hit the skids once again Monday night when the high school committee decided it was not ready to send the matter for vote at pending Island annual town meetings.
The proposal to link the high school with the Oak Bluffs wastewater plant still lacks a complete set of designs; written agreements from Oak Bluffs town and wastewater commission or potential financial backers; and permitting at the state level for construction.
A young filmmaker perched on a stool in the Chilmark Community Center Saturday afternoon, microphone in hand. An Island woman born and raised, she waited for the lights to flicker on and then watched, her eyes twinkling, as the members of the audience joined in steady round of applause for her film about her Island and featuring the people who call it home.
A suicidal husband, a vaudeville act down on its luck, a pair of commedia dell’arte clowns, two morbidly sensitive shepherds, and a train passenger trapped in the loo with an idiot conductor on the far side of the door. What do these characters have in common? Well, brought together in one-act plays under the aegis of Island Theatre Workshop, they represent a fruitcake slice of the human predicament. They are also, as samples of the absurdist tradition, a whole bunch of fun.

Up for Summer Job Fair
Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School will hold its annual student job fair on Thursday, April 17, at the school library. Approximately 400 students will be participating. This is a student job fair and is not open to the general public.
Local businesses have been asked to sign up early for this spring and summer staffing event. Students will be ready to interview with applications in hand.
Martha’s Vineyard Community Services will end its Visiting Nurse Service on June 30 after nearly 43 years of operation.
Seventy-two clients and 22 employees — 12 staff members and 10 per-diem workers — will be affected. The agency is not accepting new referrals, said Julia Burgess, executive director of Community Services.
Program director Sharon Clauss-Zanger noted the closing date is subject to assurance of adequate and appropriate transition arrangements for its home-care clients.
