Edgartown will appeal a decision handed down last week by the state Housing Appeals Committee, which removed town-imposed conditions on a contentious 11-home development in an environmentally-sensitive area off Watcha Path.

The Cozy Hearth project was proposed by a group of Vineyard residents who banded together to build housing for themselves using Chapter 40B — a state law that allows affordable housing projects to skirt most zoning regulations.

The plan was to build 11 single family homes on 10.9 acres, in an area zoned for three-acre parcels.

The proprietor of the Bunch of Grapes bookstore in Vineyard Haven has confirmed that he intends to move off-Island but said any plan to sell the landmark Main street bookstore remains up in the air.

Jon Nelson Jr., who took over from his mother, Ann, as the bookstore’s chief executive officer in 2005, said this week that the business is not listed for sale.

“It’s a business, it’s always for sale, but officially it’s not listed with anyone,” Mr. Nelson told the Gazette.

At their annual town election Wednesday Chilmark voters easily approved three Proposition 2 1/2 overrides and reeelected selectman Warren Doty to a fourth term.

The overrides included $78,000 in education spending and two small funding requests that will allow the town to contribute its share to help pay for the county health care access and pest control programs.

A total of 211 voters, or 26 per cent of the 805 registered, turned out for the election.

A complete story about the Chilmark election will appear in the Friday Gazette.
