August can be a tough month for catching striped bass. It isn’t that the fish have gone south or disappeared, but they are certainly into their warm water August state of mind.

Sullivan Walk and Run

The Hon. Louis W. Sullivan, M.D. and Ginger Sullivan will sponsor the 20th annual 5K Run/Walk Road Race for Health and Fitness on Saturday, August 23 at 9 a.m.

Participants may preregister and pick up numbers on Friday, August 22 from 3 to 6 p.m. in the main lobby at the hospital. Please enter the hospital via the Eastville avenue entrance and proceed to the new lots behind the hospital. Follow signs to the new main entrance. The first 300 registered participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt.

The Farm Neck Golf Club in Oak Bluffs will bring back the dynamic Jensen brothers, Murphy and Luke, for the third annual Martha’s Vineyard Tennis Open benefit on August 22 and 23.

The brothers, formerly French Open doubles champions, will play with the lucky bidders in a pro-am competition on Saturday and also run the popular tennis clinics. The entire weekend proceeds are going to benefit the Martha’s Vineyard Cancer Support Group, a nonprofit organization that offers financial aide and support to Islanders in need with cancer.

Sponsored by The Black Dog, Cabrinha kites and John Amundson Customs, Black Dog businessman Rob Douglas, in what was described as “one of the most thrilling kite speed races of all time,” recently set a new U.S. record at 40.21 knots, a record held since 2003 by Robby Naish.

Mr. Douglas placed second among all competitors at the Fuerteventura Kite Speed World Cup in Canary Islands, Spain, beating the current world champion and world speed record holder.

The Vineyard Conservation Society executive director Brendan O’Neill has been named the 2008 recipient of the Nicholas A. Robinson Environmental Award for his placed-based environmental work on Martha’s Vineyard. The award recognizes significant public service contributions in the environmental field by a graduate of the environmental legal studies program at Pace University School of Law in New York.

Mr. O’Neill shares this year’s honor with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., also a Pace graduate.
