The fire was caused by someone who was having a fire on the beach that later spread to the grass, said Chilmark fire Jeremy Bradshaw.

The Martha’s Vineyard Boys and Girls Club is seeking permission to build a nearly 22,000-square-foot clubhouse in Edgartown as the organization runs out of room at its current campus. 

Katama Meadows, a mixed-income housing and subdivision proposal in Edgartown whose developers have a contentious past, opened what’s expected to be a lengthy public hearing before the Martha’s Vineyard Commission on Thursday night.

On Wednesday, the board interviewed Michael Gately, an Islander who has worked for a global marine infrastructure company, Tisbury harbor master Gary Kovack, and charter boat captain Kurt Peterson.

The first potential project with a municipal employee preference will also head to town meeting floor this year, with Island Housing Trust asking if the towns are willing to help pay for a teacher housing project in West Tisbury.
