The proprietors of a planned Italian restaurant on Union street in Vineyard Haven received the green light for an all-alcohol license from Tisbury selectmen Thursday night.

Chef Savatore Della Torre and manager Dusan Veselinovic told selectmen their Italian eatery, at the former location of Fella’s, will seat 35 to 37 people inside and another 10 to 12 outside.

The partners met while working at La Soffitta on Main street, Mr. Veselinovic said. Their plan for the restaurant is to be open daily from mid-morning until 10 p.m. or 11 p.m. depending on the season, he said.

Mr. Veselinovic said the menu will offer authentic Italian cuisine.

“We’re going to have some real food over there... and it has to be fresh, of course. No frozen. That’s our promise.”

Several downtown Tisbury residents rose to speak in favor of granting the alcohol license for the new venture.

“I’m highly in favor of this happening,” said Paul Doherty, whose sentiments were echoed by Peter Cronig, Michael Levandowski, Bob Breth and others.

“It’s really nice to see the neighborhood come together like this,” selectman Melinda Loberg said.

The restaurant could be open to the public as early as the end of this month, Mr. Veselonovic told the Gazette after the license hearing.

Among other business Thursday, selectmen took no action on a proposal to offer nonprofits a discounted rate for the town’s new one-day alcoholic beverage permit, which costs $100. Ms. Loberg had floated the idea of a 50 per cent discount for nonprofit permits, but found no support from fellow selectman Jeff Kristal. Selectman James Rogers was absent.

Another good restaurant is a great contribution. Hoping people realize Tisbury could be the real gem of the Island.

BRAVO SALVATORE! We were/are so happy to learn we can once again reserve a table to come enjoy your wonderful cooking - the sooner, the better. Another family celebration coming up in August. Let's hope the good times return by then.
Grazie e stai bene.
