Groundhog Day came early for Steamship Authority customers seeking summer reservations for their automobiles.
The boat line’s website crashed as soon as seasonal reservations became available online, at 5 a.m. Tuesday.
By mid-afternoon the site was back up, after a harrowing day for customers and SSA managers alike.
“I apologize to all our customers for the inconvenience this has caused,” said general manager Robert Davis, speaking to the board of governors at their monthly meeting Tuesday and promising a full accounting of what went wrong.
Customers who set their alarms for the early-bird start were frustrated by the failure, which mirrors a crash at the beginning of the 2018 season.
Well past noon, visitors to the site were still being greeted with a bright blue message reading "Sorry About That" and a red-lettered announcement that “we have run into an error we weren’t able to recover from.”
In 2019 and again this year, the boat line staggered its Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard opening dates in order to manage website traffic and keep the site from crashing.
Nantucket’s opening earlier this month went smoothly, Mr. Davis said, but Vineyard travelers account for three to four times the volume of website traffic from the smaller island.
“Despite the extensive preparation and load testing that had occurred prior to the opening date, this (crash) has occurred, preventing our customers from making reservations for travel,” Mr. Davis told the boat line board Tuesday morning.
The website developer, the SSA’s information technology staff and representatives from its software and server vendors have all been working to resolve the crash, Mr. Davis said.
“This is obviously an unacceptable result on our biggest reservation day of the year,” he told the board.

Is there a bottom to how low
Kelly Wellesley/ChilmarkIs there a bottom to how low our satisfaction level with the SSA can go? I've met Marc Hanover. Dined at Linda Jean's many times. Marc's a nice guy. The SSA board doesn't need a nice guy. Please clean house. But how does that happen?

I dread ferry reservation day
Kate H CTI dread ferry reservation day each year because of these headaches with the ferry website. It leads me consider other options for our summer vacation- perhaps the Jersey shore. SSA needs to get it together.
Surely I’m not alone in
Island Guy MVSurely I’m not alone in seeing this repeated failure as an opportunity for island residents regular frustrations to be heard through the louder voices of summer people. If the workhorse says ‘nay’ it’s met with a shrug. I wonder what the SSA response will be when the golden goose squaks?
Just imagine if one relied on
Jane v EdgJust imagine if one relied on the ssa to get home, get to work every day, get to a doctor appt, the airport for your long awaited vacation, go anywhere? I have lived here for a short time, just 30 years of so. during the past two years are the only times I have been stranded in woods hole. One on the Oct night when boats were cancelled due to high winds warnings. It waa dead calm in WH, my fellow travelers who had to find a hotel rooms and get back home the next day can affirm, this is not just a problem for our summer visitors and those on vacation
First World problem.

I understand the majority of
Kate MvI understand the majority of you are planning vacations but try and deal with this when it is your home for 60 yrs since birth. How do you think we feel trying to make dr appts or go to family funerals, etc. we might get a break on the cost but we are in the same boat when it comes to dealing with the site constantly crashing. Hell sometimes we make a reservation and everything goes through only to be told in the day of sailing that you are not in the system. We sit in standby except on summer weekends there is no standby for us from Friday-Monday so this gives us 3 days in the middle of the week to try and get a doctors appt. Their website breaks down constantly, welcome to our world.
This day of SSA web site
Snj CanaanThis day of SSA web site error simply a debacle. I too up at 4:45 and was beyond irate by mid afternoon ...SOMETHING HAS GOT TO BE DONE TO PREVENT THIS!!! There has got to be a better way!!!! PLEASE FIGURE IT OUT!!!
Totally forgot that today was
Jim Manhasset, NYTotally forgot that today was the day. Checked the news and WOW! Got on the SSA website pronto and made a reservation in 2 minutes. Easiest reservation in the 37 years we have been making reservations. Maybe the site should crash every year!
I spent most of the day
Ashley Ranaldi WellesleyI spent most of the day waiting for the site to be up and running and then loading and refreshing the page to get a reservation booked. Because I can use head start, I luckily was able to book many of my upcoming reservations earlier this month. I really had to get this one trip done though and it was frustrating to see that once I was able to get to the point of choosing a time slot, some were already full! (and that was probably 2 hours after the noon reset)
The reservation system has
rose boston and katamaThe reservation system has had difficulties on opening day sales over many years. This is not a new nor infrequent problem, it's an annual problem. But, this year wins a prize . . . I've learned to clear my calendar for the day - yes, not many can - and not stray from my laptop for more than a few minutes, because you never know if/when you may be able to successfully run the gauntlet and secure a reservation. I did secure my reservations, but lost 10 hours of my life to the SSA. The crush for opening day sales is not a new or unexpected issue. I recall devoting my morning or some portion of the day to securing reservations over the years, but never an entire day (12 hours if early rising and preparation are added . . .). The SSA has the data on the numbers of travelers using the system on opening day from year to year, why does every year bring the same problems? Where is the planning? Why is this not fixed? Where is the accountability?
