For those up really late tonight there is an astronomical event worth noting. Tonight’s last quarter moon appears close to the ringed-planet Saturn. Both are in the zodiacal constellation Virgo. Saturn is the brightest “star” in the area and has a yellowish tint. Find the moon and the solar system’s second largest planet is nearby.

I ran into Nancy Hall in the Vineyard Haven post office, who reminded me of this song from the early sixties. We spent some time lamenting our sorry state of financial affairs nation and worldwide.
Soo Whiting, on her annual southbound migration, asked me to fill in for this week’s Bird News column. While Soo and Flip Harrington are navigating their way to Florida, it seems a perfect time to wrap up the story of this year’s osprey migration.
On Dec. 3, seven Vineyarders traveled to Portland, Me., for the Northeast Aquaculture Conference and Exposition. The conference is held every two years and brings together leading marine biologists, government officials and commercial aquaculture specialists from Virginia to Maine.
Held in the Eastland Park Hotel in downtown Portland, the three-day conference was packed with over 70 presentations covering the areas of finfish aquaculture and shellfish cultivation.

I guess this past week weather-wise is called a January thaw. We did not really experience it the last several years as December was unseasonably warm.

Beige and brown and tan and black, with horns spiraled or semicircular or in undulating waves, a legion of goats marched up the hill toward us, bleating in anticipation of fresh grass and leaves.
