We lucked out and had a beautiful day for Basil Welsh’s memorial service which was held at Abel’s Hill Cemetery.
“Will you walk into my parlor?” said the Spider to the Fly; “Tis the prettiest little parlor that ever you did spy.”
The webs of funnel web weaver spiders might just be the very prettiest parlors of all, ready for a cricket, ant or grasshopper to drop by for a visit. Announced or not, an insect is a welcome guest to a funnel weaver spider.
During the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby, everyone lining up in the mornings at the Island’s councils on aging has got to love a fisherman. Every weekday during the derby, the Island’s seniors receive free fresh striped bass and bluefish and only occasionally get fresh Atlantic bonito. The program is a derby win-win.
A battalion of volunteers extending across the Island administers the program.
A diverse group of bikers, strollers, unicyclists and one space-age yellow Velo bike paraded up Main street Vineyard Haven from Veterans Park to Owen Park last Saturday to announce the formation of the Island Climate Action Network (ICAN), an upstart community organization dedicated to educating the Island about climate issues and ultimately shaping Island policy.
