ILLNESS AWARENESS

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

My name is Rebecca Perkalis. I have bipolar disorder. I would like to have the community know that Mental Illness Awareness Week is October 2 to 8. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the United States Congress established the first week of October in recognition of NAMI’s efforts to raise mental illness awareness. NAMI is an organization that fights mental illness stigma and promotes advocacy.

CLEAR THE AIR

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

West Tisbury selectman Richard Knabel’s piece in the Vineyard Gazette entitled Those Who Deny Science Are Unfit to Lead [Vineyard Gazette Sept. 2, 2011] seems to have the support of an environmental law firm (nonprofit) in their recent issue of Earthjustice magazine.

TEN YEARS LATER

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

LIBRARY OF THE FUTURE

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

The front-page August 30 story about the Edgartown Library describes additional library woes and I want to share my concern. First the slogan, Frankly, We Love our Library, has a negative and apologetic tone. There is enough confusion about the Edgartown Library without promoting a slogan that does not look to the future. The Edgartown Library serves the public well, and there is no reason to be negative and apologetic.
