A group of volunteers has fanned out across the Island this week, looking for people without homes who they hope to include in this year’s point-in-time homeless person count. Part of a national effort by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Vineyard count is organized by Dukes County in collaboration with the Cape and Islands Regional Network to Address Homelessness.

Last summer, Isabella Morais got to thinking that teenage artists on the Island would benefit from a studio space where they could gather and create art. Her dream is becoming a reality with the Teen Art Cafe, a drop-in studio and classes for teenage artists that launches this week.

Call it coincidence but lately each tuxedo cat that is adopted is replaced by another one looking for a home. We still have Mickey, a black and white six-year-old male, and he has been joined by a lovely three-year-old female.

The Martha’s Vineyard Commission is working with others in the community to draft a new version of the Martha’s Vineyard Transportation Plan. They are inviting the community to a public meeting next week.

The heating season total benefit levels now range from $460 to $1,095 for non-subsidized residents, and $325 to $765 for some subsidized housing residents.
