Nearly 25 years after the M/V Martha’s Vineyard began her daily seven-mile passages between Woods Hole and the Vineyard, the Steamship Authority ferry is getting a $17.4 million makeover.

Alex’s Place, a community center where teenagers can draw comics, learn to play the ukulele and escape the numerous pressures of Island life, has a new director with a new philosophy for the space.

Reproductive health care on the Vineyard is notably lacking in education, communication and access. This was the conclusion of eight rural scholars who recently spent two weeks on the Island studying the issue.
