Webster’s Dictionary defines the term harbinger as “a person or thing that comes before to announce or give indication of what is to follow.” If someone had either the time or inclination to search the various newspapers of this country, they would be hard-pressed to find any publication that uses the term harbinger more than the Vineyard Gazette in late winter and early spring — referring, of course, to the magical harbingers of spring.

At least two Vineyard restaurants plan to participate in the Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer effort to battle the disease.

Mediterranean Restaurant in Vineyard Haven and Sweet Life Cafe in Oak Bluffs will bake unique desserts the week of May 5 through 11 leading up to Mother’s Day. They are among more than 100 restaurants and bakeries in the Boston area participating in the effort. All sales from the special dessert benefit breast cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

More information is available by calling 617-632-4687.

Chocolate, a pair of running shoes and you: the first Hot Cocoa 5K Run and Walk for the Safe Haven Project, an event where all proceeds go directly to the spring camp, is set for April 20.

The run will be the kick-off event of this year’s Safe Haven camp, which brings children with HIV and AIDS together for a week away from judgment on Martha’s Vineyard.

The race begins at 10 a.m. on the first full day of camp, April 20, followed by cocoa, cookout and celebration at the finish line with this year’s campers.
