Save the date for next Saturday, Feb. 9, when the Chilmark School holds its annual winter fundraiser. The party will be held at the Chilmark Community Center. Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish provide the backbeat.

The fundraiser is from 7 to 11:30 p.m. That’s way past Chilmark midnight (8 p.m.) but, hey, time to step up and stay up for a good cause.

The cost is $15 at the door or online at ticketsmv.com/chilmark.

For the first time in a long time the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard has three adorable small dogs available for adoption with two more due into the shelter in a few days. At the shelter now are Jerry, a sweet brown and tan Chihuahua, who looks and acts a lot younger than his 13 years. He is a little afraid of young children, but he would make a wonderful watch dog and loves to curl up in a warm lap. His friend is Millie, an Italian greyhound/chihuahua mix. Millie comes with a complete set of fancy clothes, even pajamas, which she loves to wear.

At the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, a black and white photograph freezes Ben Higgins in mid-air as he twists his body over the high jump bar.

“I remember he used to sit in the front row,” said Martha’s Vineyard regional high school history teacher Elaine Weintraub as she looked at the photograph.

On Tuesday, Jan. 29, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard (HMV) is holding an open house at its new location in the Tisbury Market Place. For many years now HMV has worked out of a trailer on the grounds of the hospital but thanks to a gift from Katherine Graham in 2001 it was able to purchase a new condo unit.

A gift from Don Davis made in the name of his friend Dick Craven has also made possible a new library/meeting room. Others in the community have donated office furniture.
