NEW YORK CITY — I watched the first episode of How’s Your News? on Sunday night and am inclined to think that this broadcast may represent the greatest single example of a dream come true that I’ve ever personally witnessed.

Wind turbines are coming.

That statement is not just a hopeful vision for a cleaner and more efficient energy future — it is also a statement of fact. It is happening, and happening quickly.

Our newly inaugurated chief executive wants more electricity from renewable energy. In his inaugural address, President Obama declared that we must harness “the sun and the winds” to power our lives. Our governor wants more wind power. Deval Patrick has set a goal for the state to generate 2,000 megawatts of wind power by the year 2020.

President Obama has inherited the most challenging global economic crisis in the nation’s history. If we thought for one moment that we had the luxury of political drama offered up by Republicans and those few Blue Dog Democrats who have become oppositionists, we are sadly mistaken as daily Americans lose jobs by the thousands. The time to pull together as a nation is now if indeed we are true patriots and can bring ourselves to put the country first.

“Um” and “uh” are currently used words today even though they aren’t really words. We use them like words when we are trying to think of what we want to say. “Anyways” is another example. Did you know that anyway is a word, but anyways is not? I tried to talk for a minute without using any of these words and without pausing. It was very difficult. I find it interesting that these non-words are used all the time and real words like “thus” are becoming uncommon.
