Two people pulled from the waters off Edgartown on Thursday have died, according to the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office.

First responders were called to Cow Bay shortly after 11 a.m. for a report of a capsized boat with people in the water, Edgartown fire Chief Alex Schaeffer said.

The U.S. Coast Guard launched crews from Woods Hole and Air Station Cape Cod, and when they arrived, they recovered the 70-year old man and 60-year old woman who had been fishing aboard the 47-foot skiff before it capsized, according to a Coast Guard spokesperson.

The two fishermen, who were unresponsive, were brought ashore in Oak Bluffs, where paramedics brought them to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

On Thursday evening, district attorney Robert Galibois confirmed that both people had died. 

“I can confirm that two people have passed away,” he said in a statement. “The preliminary investigation does not suggest foul play and it appears at this time that weather played a role in this tragedy.”

Mr. Galibois did not identify the people and said the investigation was ongoing. State police are leading the investigation and had no further details on the incident Thursday evening. 

The Vineyard saw strong winds throughout New Year’s Day and the temperatures in Nantucket Sound were about 37 degrees at 11 a.m., according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
