Vineyard Take Out, which has a location along State Road next to the West Tisbury post office, was picked by the airport commission to run the 2,500-square foot restaurant in the airport terminal.
A West Tisbury breakfast and lunch spot will take over the former Plane View Restaurant location at the Martha’s Vineyard Airport in the new year.
Vineyard Take Out, which has a location along State Road next to the West Tisbury post office, was picked by the airport commission to run the 2,500-square foot restaurant in the airport terminal, beating out two other prospective restaurateurs for the lease.
The Plane View had served hungry travelers for more than 20 years but is set to close at the end of the year after owner Bob Jackson decided that he wanted to retire.
The airport commission put out a request for proposals in September, and the commission decided on the applications in early December, according to airport director Geoff Freeman.
“Things are scored on experience of the proposer, proposal context, business plan and general impression of the proposal,” Mr. Freeman said. “Three proposals were turned in and after assessing all three of them, Vineyard Take Out was selected.”
According to Mr. Freeman, the other two bidders were the owners of 19 Raw in Edgartown and Chef Deon’s Kitchen, which was located at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Oak Bluffs and closed in September.
Mr. Freeman said that the Plane View was loved by the airport community and will be missed.
“We really are sorry to see Bobby Jackson and the Plane View end their long relationship with the airport. They’ve been a great tenant and a great part of the family,” he said. “We wish him well on the retirement. We hope that the new restaurant can fill the shoes that have been left.”
Vineyard Take Out, which serves pizza, sandwiches and paninis at its West Tisbury location, is still ironing out its plans, but Mr. Freeman and Vineyard Take Out owner Sergio Martins hope that the second Vineyard Take Out location will be open by Feb. 1.
When he found out the lease would be up for bid, Mr. Martins was excited.
“I know the Plane View and I know Bob Jackson very well, so I know it’s a nice place and I wanted to move forward,” he said.
The airport menu will see some changes from the State Road location, according to Mr. Martins, who used to work at the Ocean View Restaurant.
“I have ideas but I need to go in there first and see how I feel and what I need to change,” he said. “I know Bob has done a good job over there, but things can always be better.”
Mr. Martins said the new location will be a big undertaking, but he is looking forward to the challenge.
“It’s something new for me too,” he said “I’m very excited but I know it’s a big project, so I got to go for it.”

I agree that another pizza/sandwich shop is just repetitious.(FYI, I do not know the owners of 19 Raw, this is a completely unsolicited statement.)
