The girls and boys soccer teams defeated their respective opponents Monday to advance to the next round of playoffs.
The girls beat Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical High School 5-1. Goal scorers included Elle Mone who netted two goals, Reese Malowski, Laney Light and Leah Thomson.
The boys team took the field after the girls and shutout Cardinal Spellman in a 5-0 win. Caleb Miller scored two goals, and Lucas Souza, Victor Daghetti and Miguel Mantesso scored one goal each.
Girls coach Matt Malowski commended his team for their overall play.
“We had really great ball movement, the way we distributed the ball,” he said. “We get left to right, playing back to our center backs, all that stuff was fantastic.”
Even with the dominant score, he felt that in the first half the players were putting too many touches on the ball rather than shooting.
“At halftime, [I told them] to stop going for that extra touch,” he said. “Stop going for the extra pass right around that box, 20 yards out in the box. Just start shooting.”
That coaching advice paid off, as Mone scored her second goal three minutes into the second period and there were more shot attempts overall.
Eyes are now on North Reading, the girls’ next opponent. The game will be on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 3 p.m. at North Reading. Coach Malowski is anticipating a tougher matchup.
“Defensively, we have to stop those counter attacks better. North Reading isn’t going to give us 34 shots on goal, so we just need to be comfortable being uncomfortable and still executing,” he said.
Boys coach Rodrigo Honorato felt his team played their game plan all the way through.
“Our style of play is possession, and I think we demonstrated that throughout the whole game,” he said.
Coach Honorato shouted out the play on the flanks, particularly from Kenny Martinez, who was often found zipping up and down the field with speed and confidence.
“He’s just an amazing player. It’s not his position. He’s a winger. He likes playing up top, but if I put him in defense or up front, he’s willing to give it all for his team,” he said.
For the next round, the boys will play Chicopee on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. at Chicopee. Coach Honorato said the boys will have a light practice Tuesday and watch film to prepare.
“[Chicopee] plays on turf, so I assume that they’re very ball on the ground, no give and goes. I’m going to do my homework tonight and watch their games. But they’re going to come out the same way [with] intensity, so we need to do the same,” he said.

Malowski has done a good job
Soccer Fan V HavenMalowski has done a good job this year coaching the kids. He has sat some experienced girls at times and played the younger kids and its paid off by created depth. Lets hope the long ride out west doesnt derail this team. The seniors on the team have really played well when needed.
