Joel B. (Jim) Goldstein M.D., 92
Joel B. (Jim) Goldstein M.D., of Tisbury and Bryn Mawr, Pa., died after a long illness on Sept. 23. He was 92.
Born Nov. 22, 1932 in Wilkes Barre, Pa., Jim attended Haverford College and served in the U.S. Army at the end of the Korean War.
He became a beloved psychiatrist who exuded kindness and compassion, and who will be fondly remembered as a benevolent, generous man with a genuine love of people.
He earned his MD and interned at Jefferson Medical College and completed his residency under mentors Drs. Calvin Settledge, Selma Kramer and Leo Madow.
His career as a child psychiatrist and psychoanalyst spanned more than 60 years.
In 1960, he met the love of his life, Debby Zimskind, while they were in different medical schools, and they were married in 1962. Jim taught as a professor at Jefferson Medical College, University of Pennsylvania and the Women’s Medical College (now Drexel University), and was known as an outstanding teacher and mentor.
He worked with Head Start, the Phebe Anna Thorne School at Bryn Mawr College, and other early childhood development programs for many years while in private practice, and in later years was secretary of the Margaret S. Mahler Child Development Foundation.
He came to the Island in the 1950’s while pursuing course work in Woods Hole, returned with his family beginning in 1968, and resided in Makonikey, both seasonally and intermittently throughout the year, until 2019.
He was an avid reader whose guilty pleasure was mystery novels and, along with Debby, a devoted opera lover. Known to residents both year-round and seasonal, for more than 40 years Jim and Debby loved biking in the state forest and porch talk.
He was predeceased by his parents Sara and Zoltan.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, A. Deborah Goldstein of Bryn Mawr, Pa., his son Paul Z. Goldstein of Washington, DC, his niece Sally Wolberg of Highland Park, N.J. and cousins Jeff and Susan Zimskind of Allentown, Pa.
He will be missed by his many friends.
In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to make a donation to an early childhood charity of their choice.
