Music enticed visitors from around the Island to celebrate Jewish culture on Tuesday at Chabad on the Vineyard’s Jewish Culture Festival.
The event was held at a private residence in West Tisbury.
Larry and Susan Greenfield decided to come after seeing how many different presentations were available. There was klezmer music playing as they entered.
“The music was extraordinary,” Ms. Greenfield said. “We couldn’t help ourselves and started to dance, worked up an appetite.”
The couple said the food was wonderful, especially the brisket. Throughout the food tent, there were dishes presented for different Jewish holidays. The brisket, alongside honey cake, were set up for Rosh Hashanah. Fruit blintzes and pesto salmon were offered for Shauvot.
Guests also had the chance to ask Jewish genealogists questions and watch a scribe showcase Hebrew lettering.
Yitzchok Moully was in charge of the two communal murals at the festival. He invited guests to paint outlined images as a chance to connect with each other. He said the paintings gave people a chance to take part in Jewish art instead of just viewing it.
“Let’s roll up our sleeves and connect,” he said.
Maddie Trice and Kimani Isaac worked together on the image of a mother and her daughter lighting Shabbat candles. Ms. Isaac had been biking by the event when he heard the music. When she found out what the event was, she texted Ms. Trice and they both bought tickets. Ms. Trice said she was eager to learn more about her heritage.
“I’m always excited to get to connected to that part of my heritage on the Vineyard because I spend a lot of time connecting with my Black culture here,” she said. “It’s been wonderful to learn.”
The comedian Elon Gold headlined the event. Before bringing Mr. Gold on stage, Rabbi Tzvi Alperowtiz addressed the crowd.
“Hopefully, today will add to all the warmth and love we feel towards Judaism,” he said.

Bob EdgartownElon Gold was amazing and shows how a comedian can be extremely funny using PG material without all the disturbing language used by other comedians. A great event and hope it comes back again next year.
