A drone operator was called in last week to rescue a lost Jack Russell terrier that was finally found in Edgartown.
The skittish dog, Esther, had initially been rescued off-Island by Angels Helping Animals. She was being kept in Oak Bluffs temporarily by Caroline Thornton until a more long-term home had been found for her in Edgartown.
But, clearly, once there, Esther wanted to go back to Oak Bluffs. After a day in her new Edgartown home, she disappeared.
For three days, volunteers searched for Esther. Then, in desperation, Sam Aromin of Hawkeye Aerial Systems in Fall River, was called in to help. Mr. Aromin is a retired military drone expert dedicated now to finding lost dogs.
Mr. Aromin spent three days and nights searching with his drone for Esther even taping Ms. Thornton’s voice and playing it during the search to call to the dog.
Finally, the drone spotted Esther behind the Edgartown police station and she is now happily back in Oak Bluffs with Ms. Thornton.
