Hampered by bad weather and ground conditions, the construction of a new sewer pipe is not expected to be completed until June 23.
Major construction along Edgartown-West Tisbury Road that was supposed to wrap up in the middle of May has been delayed and will not be completed until late June, according to an Edgartown town official.
Construction of a new sewer line started in February and was initially expected to finish by May 16. But the project was hit with poor weather and ground conditions, pushing the new completion date to June 23, according Edgartown town administrator James Hagerty.
The construction involves digging-up a mile of cast-iron sewer pipe on the side of the road to replace it with a new one. The project is being paid for by a $4.8 million article approved at the 2024 annual town meeting.
The old pipe had failed several times in the past, resulting in emergency repairs near E.C. Cottle’s.

Ugh. Maybe if Edgartown had
OB Villager OBUgh. Maybe if Edgartown had awarded the project to a local/island contractor, we would be complete by now and not delayed.
The traffic has flowed
