The promise in a child
Rests in adult hands
A gift that never ends
For one generation
To improve upon the next
Health, welfare and education
Should be a birthright endowed
Not left to the fate of birth
But cultivated instead
Regrettably, it is not
Without a level playing field
Potential goes unrealized
In life’s multiracial reality
Struggles are magnified
By societal disparities
Fueled by inequity
Masquerading as colorblindness
Yet, throughout American history
Courageous Black men and woman
Defying unthinkable barriers
Reach the highest levels
In every segment of society
A testament to generational progress
Still, a resounding voice remains
From a Black lore adage
“. . . have to be twice as good”
To claim a rightful seat
At the table of opportunity.
