A Dream Deferred

America is a chameleon / Forever adapting, morphing / Caught between what it is / And what it yearns to be / “Isms” coexist with dogmas.

America is a chameleon

Forever adapting, morphing

Caught between what it is

And what it yearns to be

Harry Seymour
Harry Seymour

“Isms” coexist with dogmas

Lofty ideals

Enshrined but imperfect

With clashing visions

Of tension and division

In a country like no other

Still, they come in droves

Drawn to a kaleidoscope

Of contradictions

And shifting hues

That blend and collide

In a dynamic vibrancy

Of hypocrisy and hope

For cherished principles

Rooted for almost 250 years

In a melting pot of diversity

A cauldron for chaos

Through stumbles and change

Rarely back, yet pressing forward

Toward visions of equality

Evidenced in the 2024 election

The hardest of glass ceilings

Not shattered, but deeply cracked

By a Black woman

Leaving a glimmer of hope

For what remains possible

For aspiring little girls

And countless others

Pursuing America’s vision

A dream undiminished

Simply deferred.

That provides us with hope, Harry! I love the perspective. Both the poetry and the art.

Your poem and painting captures the essence of how many of us feel about our current democracy. As you know I chose to be an optimist and believe our country will find common ground that protects individual rights and values. With four grand daughters, I pray in their lifetime, their dreams do come true.

Harry - I agree with Sherry. You never disappoint! The poem and art are incredibly clever, powerful and well done! They bring some light and hope to a very dark time in America. Thank you!

As only Harry, our oh so special resident Poet/Painter, can do.... there continues to be hope and inspiration for all of us moving forward in these turbulent times ... that peace and justice shall prevail.
