The Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club will be able to deepen its commitment to providing members with meals cooked on site with fresh ingredients thanks to the generosity of Jerry and Alice Jacobs.
The Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club will be able to deepen its commitment to providing members with meals cooked on site with fresh ingredients thanks to the generosity of Jerry Jacobs Jr., owner of the Boston Bruins and CEO of Delaware North, and his wife Alice.
The couple’s donation enabled the Boys & Girls Club to renovate its kitchen with a new barrier wall, plumbing and commercial-grade kitchen equipment.
“We jumped at the opportunity to partner with the Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club because we know they play a critical role feeding children and families,” Mr. Jacobs said.
Barbara-Jean Chauvin, the club’s new executive director, and Jenny Devivo, the club’s food and security director, led Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs on a recent tour of the newly finished facility.

Ms. Devivo told the Jacobs that she teaches kids about healthy eating and said the club has a garden where kids can grow their own produce. She also receives donated food from Cronig’s, Slough Farm and Grey Barn, enabling her to cook beef tacos, scratch-made pizza, potstickers, pork bolognese and turkey rubens among many other nutrient-packed meals.
“It truly takes a community to feed a community,” Ms. Devivo said.
Mr. Jacobs said in addition to the donation, Delaware North will consult with the Boys & Girls Club to teach them how to use the equipment in a way that maximizes efficiency.
“Providing nutritious meals in a caring environment is vital to the well-being and development of children, and we are happy to leverage our resources to contribute to the club’s mission of enriching the lives of the youth in this community,” Mr. Jacobs said.
The Boys & Girls Club is currently raising money to build a new structure at a location adjacent to the Edgartown recreation area to service its growing membership. Ms. Chauvin said that a start date for construction has not been determined, but that the new kitchen equipment has wheels so it can be moved when necessary.
“We’re excited that they have chosen us to partner and we’re excited for what the future brings,” Ms. Chauvin said.

Without the generosity of summer residents many island institutions, such as the new hospital, the Y, the ice rink, MV Youth and just too many to mention, would be lacking the much needed improvements to bring this island up to date and functioning properly. I say thank God for the summer residents and their big wallets and bigger hearts.
